Shaker box シェーカーボックス #1

2/4/2018 There is a wooden boat school in Kingston, New York which is 35 mins drive from our house. The last summer, we took a class to make canoe paddles and we had a great time leaning woodworking skills and making them. They offer “build your own shaker box” so we decided to take the class.  This is a 2-day class and we took the first one yesterday.

2018年2月4日 家から車で30分ぐらいに木工細工教室があります。色々なクラスがあって、大きいものだとボートを作ったり、箱、ギターなどの作り方を学べて、私たちも昨年の夏にカヌーのパドルを作りました。もちろん作ったものはお土産として持って帰れます。

今回はシェーカーボックスの教室に参加してきました。18世紀後半に活動をしていたシェーカー教の人たちが作った収納箱で、今で言うところのタッパウェアみたいなものです。このシェーカーボックスは今でも人気で、乾物、裁縫道具、ジュエリーなどをしまうのに使ったり、プレゼントとして誰かにあげたり、単に家の装飾として飾ったりします。見た目がとても洗練されていて、欲しいなぁと思っていたところに、自分たちで作れるチャンスがやってきました！2日間のコースで、2回目は来週末。ということで、お教室レポ前半です。

We are making 4 different size boxes. Wood is already sliced and edges are cut like this.
4つの異なるサイズを作ります。先生が予め木を切ってこのような状態にしてくれています。

Our teacher Bill is giving us the instruction. ビル先生のレクチャーを聴きます。

The wooden pieces in the middle are called cores. It is used for bending the wood.
私たちの作業台。

The first, boiling the wood for 20 mins so that it is easy to bend.
まずは20分間木を茹でて、曲げやすいようにします。私にはこれがおでんマシーンに見えて、、、。

Right after the wood is taken out from the boiling water,  it is wrapped/bent around the oval cores.
おでんマシーンから木を取り出した後、まだ熱いうちにすばやく型に巻きつけて形を作っていきます。
先生のお腹がパンパンでそこにばかり目がいってしまう、、、。

Using small tacks to hold the edges together.
小さな画鋲みたいなものをつかって端を止めます。

Using shapers to keep its shape. And now working on the lid.
金型を使って木の形を保ちます。ふたの部分の木も巻きつけていきます。

Not to bad right?　本当はフタの部分と本体の先端をそろえるのがベストですが、まぁ良しとしよう。

Working on a bigger piece this is Cherry.　大きいものにも挑戦。これはチェリーの木。

This is where we are now. The bottom on the right(biggest one) is “curly maple”. This is an experimental piece and Rich’s one is the only survivor as the wood is very hard and not easy to bend. Mine & other 3 students wood got ripped and could not hold it together. Anyway,  we took them home and let them dry. We are taking the second class next weekend to finish the boxes.

今ここ！右がリッチ君、左が私。リッチの一番大きい箱はカーリーメープルの木を使った実験で、木が硬くて曲げるのがとても大変でした。私も含め彼以外の4人の板は曲げている最中に折れてしまい物にならず。ということでリッチ君だけがこの木で作ることに成功しています。木を乾かす必要があるのでとりあえずこの状態で家に持って帰ってきました。来週また教室に参加して完成させる予定です。
