2/11/2018 We took the 2nd part of shaker box class yesterday. We made the bands the last week and we worked on lids and bottoms this time.
2018年2月11日 先週に引き続き、シェーカーボックスのクラスに参加してきました。前回は筒の部分を作ったので、今回は底とフタの部分を作って完成させました。
1st, drawing the line with pencil. まずは底/フタのサイズに合わせて線を引いていきます。
Next, Cutting the wood with a scroll saw. 次は電動糸鋸を使って線に沿って木を切ります。
The cutting is done. Make sure not to cut the line. Then use a disc sander and hand sanders to sand the edges.
線を切らないように少し大きめに切ります。そして電動やすりと手動やすりを使って少しずつ削り底/フタの形に合わせていきます。
The band and the lid fit eventually! ピッタリはまりました。
Next, making holes with a drill.
続いて、ドリルを使って底と筒の部分に穴を開けていきます。
Then “toothpicks” with a little bit of glue were put into holes. When the glue dried, the exceeded part of toothpicks were chopped and sanded down.
爪楊枝に木工ボンドを塗ったものを穴に入れて固定していきます。なんと、普通の爪楊枝！ ボンドが乾いたら楊枝を切って出っ張っているところをやすっていきます。
The last part is sanding the boxes to have smooth finish. Now the teacher Bill is giving us a lecture, how to use hand sanders. We did not have time to put oil/stain/poly in the class so we will do so at home.
最後に全体をやすってスムーズに仕上げます。ここで、ビル先生からヤスリ方のレクチャーを受けます。私が気になっているのはもっぱらリッチ君の頭。真顔で話を聞いてるけれど、おでこにマスクが乗ってますよw 授業の中では時間がなかったけれど、最終的にはニスを塗って仕上げます。
Tada! Rich was still working on his(left) so they are up side down but we all made beautiful boxes! though these are assembled with tiny tacks, toothpicks and a little bit of glue, they are solid and quite strong!

こんな感じに出来上がりました。写真を撮ったとき、リッチはまだ作業中だったので箱が逆さまですが（左）みんな上手に作れました！小さな画鋲のような釘と爪楊枝とほんの少しの木工ボンドしか使っていないのに、箱はかなり丈夫にできています。ニスを塗ったら家のデコレーションとして飾りたいと思います。

These are the finished Shaker boxes. We sanded with 400 grit sandpaper then applied a wood oil known as “Danish Oil”. What you see is the natural wood color without any stain. - 2/14/2018
追記（2018年2月14日）
こちらが完成版です。目の異なる4種のやすりを使ってツルツルになるまで磨き、デニッシュオイルを塗って仕上げました。生の木は白っぽかったけれど、オイルを塗ったら木そのものの色が出て、温かみのある感じに仕上がりました。とーっても満足です！
