3/7/2019 Well, it’s already March and spring is just around the corner. We went to Japan right after Christmas and spent beautiful and wonderful 5 weeks with family and friends there. It was so nice to go back home around the new year time! Anyway, we’ve kinda ignored our coffee table project for 4 months… But it’s time to face it we committed to complete it this time.
2019年3月７日 気がつけばもう3月。まだまだ寒いけれど、木の芽がでたり花が蕾をつけたり、春はもうすぐそこまできています。昨年末から5週間日本に帰省をして、家族やお友達と楽しい時間を過ごし、美味しい日本食も沢山食べてかなり良い充電ができました。日本で過ごすお正月は6年ぶりだったので特別な気分を味わえたのも良かったです。やっぱり日本はいいなぁ。
さて、今日は長らく放ったらかしになっていたコーヒーテーブルのお話です。板を買ってから4カ月近く放置していましたが、重い腰をあげてプロジェクトに取り組みました。(板を買いに行ったときの記事はこちら)
This is the finished table. It fits in the livingroom well, I guess.
完成したテーブルです。木は脚を含めてチェリー(さくらんぼ)です。カウチや他の家具とも調和がとれているかなと思います。逆光で部屋が暗いけど。。。
This is how it,s done↓ 以下、プロジェクトの詳細です↓
1. the slab surface was sanded with an electric sander(80/120 grid), and then by hand(220/400).
まずは板の表面を目の荒い電動ヤスリでヤスって、その後は目の細かいヤスリ紙を使って手作業で仕上げます。板が長いので腕がパンパンに。
2. We decided to order craftman style legs to save some time… yes, we cheated… Rich painted the legs with Bush Oil.
テーブルの脚は時間節約のため(という言い訳)、家具屋さんに注文しました(汗) 他の家具とも合わせやすいようにクラフトマンと呼ばれるスタイルのものにしました。まずは天然オイルを塗ります。
3. Cut the slab by 4′. 約1.2mの長さに切ります。
4. Assemble the legs and attach them to the board. 脚を組み立て板にネジを入れて固定していきます。
5. Fill the holes and gaps witn epoxy.表面の穴や隙間をエポキシ(樹脂)で埋めていきます。
close up! 時間が経つと木が吸収して凹んでしまうので、結構たっぷり盛ります。
6. After epoxy got firmed, the surface was sanded again and painted with bush oil. エポキシが乾いたら、出っ張った部分をヤスって、天然オイルを塗り込んでいきます。
7. And the 4 coats of polyurethane at the end. 仕上げにポリウレタンを4重塗り。傷や汚れ防止になるので、一日中かけて何度も塗りました！
Now that we can put coffee mags and cookie tray on the table. Oh and popcorn bowl too! We are happy with what we made:)
今まではテーブルがなかったのでカウチに座りながらお茶を飲んだりケーキを食べたりするのが不便だったのですが、これでようやく解決です。人を招いてもおもてなしできるスペースとして使えるようになったので大満足です。
