6/19/2019 We were planing on doing this project in mid April but our first contractor backed out right before starting it. They demanded us to pay 100% upfront and if we don’t like that we should find someone else… Well, it usually goes something like 50% upfront, 50% when it’s done, right? We don’t even know how good this guy is and can’t pay full amount before he isn’t even on sight. It was frustrating as we kind of liked him but anyway… We had to start over from zero again. We finally found another guy and this time everything worked out well. He started working at the end of May.

2019年6月19日　ウッドデッキは4月の中旬にプロジェクトを開始することで業者との間で話がまとまっていたのですが、最後の詰めの段階で業者がまさかの撤退。最終的な契約のやり取りでプロジェクトの全額前払いを要求してきたのです。支払いは最初に50％、終了後に50％のような契約が普通なはずなんですが、「うちは全額前払い以外の条件では仕事は引き受けないから、払いたくないなら誰か他を探してくれ」と言ってきました。まだ何の仕事にも手をつけていないのに（そして彼がどれだけ腕があるかもわからない）、この条件はリスキーすぎてのめません。最悪お金だけ払ってバックレられる心配もあったので、この業者との話はなかったことになりました。最初は良い感じに話が進んでいて、リッチ君もこの業者なら大丈夫だと思っていただけに、ここにきて白紙になりやるせません。ということで、しばらくはモヤモヤと怒りとフラストレーションと戦っていましたが、、、ようやく新しい業者を見つけ（支払い条件もクリア）、5月の終わりに作業が開始しました。

First, digging 12 holes(8″ x 48″ deep) for piers. There was an inspection from town hall after the holes were made. The contractor passed the inspection.
まずは支柱用に深さ1.2mの穴を12個つくります。穴堀りのあと、役場の検査官がきて深さを測り合格をもらいました。

Next, pour concrete into the holes.
次に掘った穴にコンクリートを流し込みます。

The foundation was made.

作業がどんどん進んでいきます。

These are the red cedar boards. We do love the natural look but decided to apply UV protection stain. We are using Penofin western red cedar oil based stain, it is not thick so the grains are visible. The painting job is not included the contract and this is totally optional so WE painted 75 boards( front, back two sides ) all by ourselves which took us 3 days… Oh man… this was tough.
デッキの木材は杉を選びました。自然のままでも良いのですが、長持ちさせるためにオイルベースの染料（透明なので木目が見える状態）を塗ります。この染料はオプションなので業者に依頼している作業には含まれておらず、75本の材木を3日かけて二人で塗りました。これは本当に大変な作業でした。
