2019 Gardening August

8/27/2019 Monthly gardening update! It’s nice to look back the post from previous month(gardening in July) to see the comparison. In July,  most vegetables were green but now I can see the colors! Tomatoes are slowly turning orange to red, cucumbers are turning deep green. And Japanese green pepper plants are producing fruits endlessly! This is our first year growing them and we are surprised that they are super hardy and low maintenance. Unfortunately, our kabocha squash got attacked by squash bugs… This was our big mistake that we didn’t identify what was really going on until the very end. We were away for a week and when we got back, the vines were all yellow. we thought that they got too much heat and not enough of water. We didn’t examine closely and just gave them more water. By the time I realized that this was not the water problem, the bugs got into the fruits. They all died… We lost all the eggplant plants in May and now Kabocha squash. We learned something from our mistakes and also realized that how difficult doing the organic garden is. I hope the rest of our vegetables stay happy and healthy until the season is over. Never stop learning!

Our daily harvest sometime in August.

Our daily harvest on the other day. We sowed Daikon radish seeds again back in June. They grew well and matured within two months! I made pork and miso broth soup with daikon radish and green onion(one on the fore-side). yum!

Since my hubby is half Italian, I should make Italian dishes, right? I made bolognese sauce with the Rome tomatoes.

Our cucumber plants are going crazy!! I decided to pickle and can them this year with our home grown garlic! I’ve also canned roasted cherry tomato brushetta with again our garlic and basil. These are a nice small gift for some casual parties.

On site. Swiss chard are still doing well. we like stir-fry or making soup with it.

Daikon radish, beets, tomatoes.

Our goodness cucumbers. You guys can slow down a bit you know that right!?

Yep, figgies are ready!
