2020 Fig tree 無花果

3/28/2020 We are growing two fig trees at home. One is from a local nursery in Hudson Valley and the other one is from Rich’s father Joe. Joe grows his tree on Long Island, NY and he got his tree from his father. So this tree is actually from Rich’s grandfather. As they are Italians, fig tree means a lot to them. Anyway, back in 2018 we got a shoot of fig from Joe with only one leaf attached. It was fragile and didn’t acclimate well. We didn’t think it survives. But when I was cleaning my garden in late fall and I found a small bud on the shoot. I then put it inside the house by a big window and by the spring of last year, the leaves started opened up(see the third photo below). And, this is how it is today. Looks extremely healthy and happy. And there is a happy surprise! There are small figs on it. Yay! We named this fig tree “JP” took it from Rich’s grand father. I would love to report how JP is doing from time to time! More stories will follow!

2020年3月28日我が家にはイチジクの木が2本あります。1本は地元ハドソンバレーの園芸店で買ったもの、そしてもう1本はリッチ君の父（リッチチ）が育てているイチジクの木の枝を切り分けてもらったものです。このリッチチの木は、もともとはリッチの祖父の木なので、彼にとってはとても意味のある大切な木です。2018年の夏に枝を切り分けてもらったときはポッキーのように細い枝に1枚葉がついただけの状態、環境が変わったショック（リッチチは我が家から2時間南にあるロングアイランドの海の町に住んでいます）からか瀕死の状態でした。この年の秋に庭掃除中に1枚しかなかった葉も枯れおちてしまった「ポッキー」を捨ててしまおうかと思って手に取ったとき、小さな芽をみつけました。おぉ！まだ生きている！！この日から木を家の中に入れて様子をみることにして冬も日当たりの良い窓辺に置いておいたところ、2019年、昨年の春に葉が出てきました（下写真3枚目）。そして迎えた2020年。2月の後半から葉が育ち始め1ヶ月ぐらいでここまで大きくなりました。そして、なんと3シーズン目にして初めて「実」をつけました。すごい生命力に驚くばかりです。やっとこの環境にもなれてくれたみたいなので、このまま元気に育ってほしいです。そして3年目にして、祖父の名にちなんでこの木に「JP-ジェイピー」という名前をつけました。もし無事に実を収穫する日がきたらまた報告したいと思います。
