4/12/2020 We attended a shaker box making workshop about two years ago. We enjoyed it a lot and decided to make on our own. We’ve been making different sizes and shapes since then and we are able to make big boxes by now. There was supposed to be a woodworkers showcase at the end of March and we planned to display our boxes. But unfortunately it was cancelled with the obvious reasons… Anyway, we finished what we have been working on and decided to display some of our stuff here:)
2020年4月12日 2年ほど前、「シェーカーボックス」と呼ばれるアメリカ版の「曲げわっぱ」を作るワークショップに参加しました。この箱作りが面白く、そこから趣味で自分たちで箱を作り始めたのですが、どんどんマニアックになっていき、最初は小さい箱を作っていたのが、今では横幅35cmを越える大きな箱を作れるようになりました。本来は3月末に開催されるはずだった北ニューヨーク州・木工細工協会の展示会に出展する予定だったので、それに合わせて色々と準備をしていたのですが、残念ながら中止になってしまいました。ということで行き所のなくなった箱たちをここで展示したいと思います（笑）
The bands are all Cherry, some are quarter-sawn as you can see. Everything is size No.8 except for the one on the fore right(Size 7). Tall and short boxes with lids, open trays and divided carrier.
メインの部分はすべて桜の木を使っています(柾目と板目の木を両方使用)。サイズは横幅が35cmほど。背の高い/低い蓋つきのもの、トレイ、ディバイダーのついたカゴ状のタイプなどなど。
Ones on the left side are fixed handle baskets, we were planing to sell those in a souvenir shop at the showcase.
左側のバスケットタイプのものは、展示会のお土産屋コーナーで販売する予定だったものです。置き場がないので、とりあえず全部畳の上に。

飾って遊ぶしかない。 左手前のトレイは特殊なマスタード色のペンキを塗ったあと、ウレタン加工をしています。水弾きテスト合格！
We cut fingers by hand.
フィンガーと呼ばれる部分は手作業で切っています。塗らすと切りやすい。

鋲を打つところに穴を開けています。
The bands are boiled for 20 minutes and bent right away.
メインの板はお湯で20分茹でて軟らかくしたあとすぐに曲げて鋲でとめます。
Finishing is always fun.
蓋と底をつけて、ヤスリでツルツルになるまで磨いたら、仕上げにオイルを。最初のひと塗り目、オイルが入っていく瞬間は病みつき。
