Volunteer plant

9/21/2020 We had our very first frost this morning, wow! It’s been cold and we started using our fire place 3 days ago. Is summer over!? I’ve complained a lot about heat and humidity this summer but I miss that already… Anyway, I want to write about our mystery plant this time. We have been making our own compost and we put scrape vegetables including seeds in it. I know it is the wrong thing to do but it is too much for me to separate seeds. So naturally, every year plants from discarded seeds emerge in the garden. We normally pull them and let the properly planted veggies to grow. This year, I saved 3 squash-ish plants and try to grow them as I didn’t plant any cucumbers this year and was hoping these were the ones. We call them “volunteers” as they came out voluntarily. As I am still a beginner and I don’t have much knowledge about squash family, I just left them there and see what happens. And sure enough, one day I saw some fruits on them.
2020年9月21日　今日はなんと初霜がおりました！ここ数日は一気に気温が下がり、家の中では暖炉も稼働しています。さてさて、今日は謎の植物について書きたいと思います。我が家では自分たちで堆肥を作っていて、これには野菜の屑はもちろん、ありとあらゆる野菜の種も混ざっています。本来は種は捨てるべきではないのだけれども、毎度分けていられないので屑としてすべて堆肥箱に入れてしまっています。そして毎年春になると、畑に撒いた堆肥から勝手に芽がでてきます。沢山出てくるので、殆どは雑草として抜いてしまうのですが、今年はウリ系の野菜を育てなかったので、ウリ系の芽が堆肥から出てきたときに3本ほど採っておいて育てることにしました。自ら望んで出てきてくれたので、「ボランティア」と呼んでいます！初心者なので、葉を見ただけではキュウリ系なのかカボチャ系なのか分からず、放置すること2ヶ月。小さな実をつけ始めました。ということで、ここからは写真を見てもらえればと思います。

I should have tried to identify what this mystery plant was when I saved them but I didn’t. And this! There are some fruits on it. I can tell they are neither cucumber nor zucchini. Japanese kabocha squash may be?
事前に勉強するべきなんでしょうけど、時間もなくただただ放置。そして実がついた時点で、キュウリやズッキーニではないことは分かりました。カボチャ系？ Oh wait! this looks like a watermelon!
カボチャじゃなくてスイカなのか!? I started growing them in containers but when garlic was harvested I transplanted them in the garlic area. From there they went crazy!
最初の2ヶ月は鉢に入れて育てていたのですが、ニンニクを収穫して場所が空いたので、そこに植え替えたらあっという間にジャングル化！ Wait wait! This looks like a kabocha squash!
あれ？やっぱりカボチャっぽい。 Oh my god, I know what it is now. A cantaloupe!
この模様は、、、、まさかのまさかのマスクメロン！ Yes, that’s right! Cantaloupe it is! From there I did some research and learn when to harvest. Should have done sooner…  
そうです。マスクメロンでした。メロンと分かったので、収穫時期を見極めるため少しお勉強。遅すぎ（笑） We harvested the first two at the beginning of September.
まずは9月頭に２つ収穫。 It weigh more than 2.5 lbs.
１つ1kg以上もあって上出来です。 I got super nervous when we first cut it though it does look like a cantaloupe inside!
最初に切るときは緊張しましたが、開けてみたらちゃんとしたマスクメロンでした。嬉しい！ It was still a younger side but sweet enough to eat it and it tasted like cantaloupe!
少し若めでちょっと固めだったけれど、甘くて、ちゃんとマスクメロンの味がしました。家でこれだけの物が育てられて大満足です！ There are still about 8 more growing in the garden. Hope they have enough time to ripen before season ends.
まだ８つぐらいゴロゴロしています。寒くなりすぎる前に熟してくれればいいなぁ。 This is the biggest and most beautiful shaped one. I can’t wait to eat it!
こちらが一番大きくて美しい形のメロンさま。早く熟れてほしいなぁ。

Last week, we went on a 5-day wild canoe camping trip to Adirondacks in New York. We carried everything in our canoe(5 days worth of food, tent, sleeping and cooking gears etc) and paddled about 10 miles into the wilderness. There is one portage section where we “carried” canoe from point A to B for about 1/4 miles to go around the dam. We truly enjoyed early stage of fall foliage!
先週、5日間ほどカヌーキャンプに行ってきました。カーキャンプと違って、5日間の衣食住用品全てをカヌーに積んで川を16kmほど流れに逆らって進み、目的地の湖へ。途中、ダムを迂回するため荷物を全て降ろして、400m歩いてカヌーを運んだりもしました。ほどんど人のいない静かな湖で早めの紅葉を思う存分楽しめて大満足の旅でした。
