Lily of the valley スズラン

6/9/2020 We’ve had some poison ivy problems behind our driveway. It’s a shady dump area and I guess it’s perfect for them to grow. It’s so annoying that I can’t really cut, pull or burn them. Last year I found a recipe of home made poison ivy killer spray and it’s working well. It’s a mixture of vinegar, salt and dish-soap and very easy to make and effective. But this has been an endless battle that I desperately want to win “forever”. So I decided to do something different.

so the other day, I was at friend’s house and taking about our gardens. Yes, a popular topic, right? Anyway, I told them that I have this problem and they recommended me to plant some lily of the valley. They have the plants everywhere around the house and they look good. They told me all the good stuff about this plants like they grow like weed and they are a very good ground cover plus they have beautiful flowers! Couldn’t be better right!? So I signed myself up for this garden project:)

2020年6月9日 我が家のドライブウェイの突き当たりはあまり陽が当たらず、日陰でジメっとしています。これはツタウルシが好む環境で、あちこちに生えていてこれが悩みの種。間違えて雑草と一緒に刈ってしまったらアウト！手袋をしていてもかぶれてしまいます。刈ったところでまた生えてくるので意味もなく、除去するのが難しいので手を焼いていて、昨年夏に、自家製の除草剤(お酢、塩、洗剤を混ぜたもの)を作って葉に散布したところ枯れたので、今はこの除草剤を時々まいています。でも、できればもう生えてきてほしくないので、何か良いアイデアがないものかと模索していました。先日、友人宅にて「庭」の話になったので、この問題について相談したところ、スズランを植えたら良いんじゃない？という提案をもらいました。「一度根を張ると雑草のように育つのよ」とのこと。しかもお花も咲くし良い香りだし、聞いていたら良いことづくしだったので、これは試す価値がありそうです。ということで、植えてみることにしました。

The garden center didn’t have them in stock so we ordered some. It came with a bundle. There are 20 pips in total.
球根は10本一纏めになって届きました。2袋注文したので20本です。

なんとオランダ産！

憎きツタウルシ。どこか別の場所で育ってくれないでしょうか。リッチ君は数年前に全身かぶれて全治3週間。大変でした（泣）

I soaked pips in water first as instructed.
球根を植える前に水に浸けると良いと書いてあったのでその通りに。

We only got 20, we could have order more but I wanted to see how they grow here first. The space is big enough for them.
球根は20本。もっと注文しても良かったのだけれど、うまく育つかわからなかったのでとりあえず20本を植えられる場所だけ耕しました。

I put some mulch and place some stones around it.
This will be a multi year project so I will keep you posted when something comes up!
モルチ をかぶせて、その辺に置いてある石で囲ってみました。あの赤枠のエリアをすべてをスズランでいっぱいにするのに何年かかるかわかりませんが、ツタウルシが育たないほどスズランでいっぱいになりますように。

P.S. My father in law’s strawberry plants are doing well. They are so fresh and sweet.
昨年の夏の終わりに義父宅からお嫁にきた苺ちゃん。ちゃんと実が成りました。甘くて美味しい！
